Fans Given Power to Choose One Toy to Enter National Toy Hall of Fame

Summary: Fans of toys such as pogo sticks, PEZ dispensers, and Transformers can now vote for one of the ‘forgotten five’ toys to be inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame. This marks the first time that fans have been given the opportunity to decide on an inductee.

The National Toy Hall of Fame is known for recognizing iconic toys that have stood the test of time. Among the regular finalists for induction are the pogo stick, the Fisher-Price Corn Popper, My Little Pony, PEZ dispensers, and Transformers. However, despite consistently being finalists, these toys have never been chosen for induction. This year, however, fans have the power to change that.

Usually, toys are selected through a process that involves historians, educators, and other experts. A panel of members votes for their top three toys out of a group of finalists. This year, in celebration of the Hall of Fame’s 25th anniversary, fans will have the opportunity to vote for one of the ‘forgotten five’ toys. Alongside the fan-selected toy, three more toys will be chosen through the traditional methods.

Those who wish to participate in the voting can cast one vote per day on the National Toy Hall of Fame website. Voting will be open until October 24. The winner, along with the other inductees, will be announced during the induction ceremony on November 9.

The National Toy Hall of Fame recognizes toys that have inspired creative play and have enjoyed popularity over a sustained period of time. Last year, the spinning top, Masters of the Universe action figures, and Lite-Brite were among the inductees. The Fisher-Price Corn Popper is a repeat finalist that encourages babies who are learning to walk. My Little Pony, which outsold Barbie during its peak popularity years, is also in the running. PEZ, which started as a breath mint, now sells billions of candies each year and continues to produce dispensers. The pogo stick has been keeping users bouncing since the early 1900s, while Transformers have inspired various forms of media.

Apart from the fan-selected toy, three other toys will be chosen from a group of 12 finalists, including baseball cards, Battleship, bingo, Bop It, Cabbage Patch Kids, Choose Your Own Adventure gamebooks, Connect 4, Little Tykes Cozy Coupe, Nerf, slime, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Ken, Barbie’s boyfriend. The National Toy Hall of Fame, located within The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, aims to honor the toys that have made a significant impact on the world of play and imagination.
