In a tragic incident, a 6-year-old boy was stabbed to death and a woman was seriously wounded in an attack in suburban Chicago. The police charged a 71-year-old man with a hate crime, alleging that he targeted both victims because of their Islamic faith and in response to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The victims were found at a home in Plainfield Township, about 40 miles southwest of Chicago. The boy, who was pronounced dead at the hospital, had been stabbed 26 times with a military-style knife. The woman had over a dozen stab wounds but was expected to survive.

The suspect was apprehended at the scene with a cut on his forehead. He is now in custody and facing charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, hate crimes, and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

The victims were identified as Wadea Al-Fayoume, a 6-year-old Palestinian-American boy, and his mother Hanaan Shahin. They had been living in the house for two years, with the suspect being their landlord. According to text messages from the mother to the boy’s father, the suspect yelled anti-Muslim slurs before carrying out the attack. The Council on American-Islamic Relations condemned the crime and highlighted the increase in hate incidents since the escalation of violence in the Middle East.
