Miniature ‘Star Wars’ X-wing Sells for Over $3 Million at Hollywood Model-Maker’s Auction

The collection, which included costumes, props, scripts, and models, brought in a staggering total of about $13.6 million.

Highlighting the auction was the Red Leader X-wing Starfighter, which was used in the 1977 film ‘Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.’ After a bidding war between two collectors, the X-wing sold for approximately $3.1 million. Another notable sale was a Stormtrooper costume from ‘Star Wars’ that fetched $645,000.

In addition to ‘Star Wars’ memorabilia, the auction also featured items from other popular sci-fi franchises. A spacesuit from Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ sold for $447,000. Several items from the original ‘Star Trek’ series were also included in the auction. A filming model of the ‘SS Botany Bay’ vessel sold for $200,000, while prop devices like a hero phaser and a tricorder were sold for $187,500 and $175,000, respectively.

Greg Jein, who had a successful career spanning nearly half a century as a model-maker, was known for his passion for Hollywood history and collecting. He worked on various films, including Steven Spielberg’s ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind,’ for which he helped create the iconic mothership model. Jein’s dedication to his craft and love of collecting were evident in the success of the auction, which attracted a wide range of enthusiasts and fans of his work.
