Thick Fog Causes Massive Pileup on Idaho Interstate

A dense fog led to a major collision involving around 30 vehicles on Interstate 86 near Pocatello, Idaho, leaving one person injured and blocking traffic for several hours.

The Collision

A thick fog led to a chaotic scene on Monday morning when around 30 vehicles collided on eastbound Interstate 86, near milepost 56, west of Pocatello, close to the Pocatello Regional Airport. The Idaho State Police reported that the fog resulted in significantly reduced visibility, causing vehicles to suddenly slow down and collide, setting off a chain reaction.

Injuries and Traffic Disruption

One person sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital by ambulance, while several others were taken by personal vehicles for medical assistance. The collision prompted the closure of I-86 between exits 56 and 59 for seven hours, as emergency responders and tow trucks worked on tending to those involved and clearing the area.

Police Statement

Lt. Michael Winans remarked that while it’s unusual to have such a large number of vehicles involved in a collision, drivers in Idaho need to be prepared for various winter conditions, including fog, sleet, and snow, which can all contribute to crashes.
